So I am a big fan of Randy Ingermanson, I read his newsletters and e-zines and I've bought his other two writing books and his snowflake programm. I think the snowflake method is an incredibly useful tool and that's why I bought this book immediately when I heard about it.I was hoping to learn how to write good (or maybe even dynamite) scenes USING THE SNOWFLAKE METHOD. Unfortunatley I didn't learn anything about that. The book explains very well the structure of a scene, the difference between proactive and reactive scenes and the different parts that are to them like goal, conflict, setback, reaction, dilemma and decision. If you're not familiar with these terms yet, then I can definitely recommend this book to you. But I had already read a lot about scene structure, I was familiar with all these terms. I didn't really learn anything new in the whole book... I had hoped to get some tips on actually using the snowflake methode to design a scene. But Randy doesn't really mention the method at all, he only says that step 8 and 9 of the snowflake methode are about creating a scene list.So yeah, I am pretty disappointed in the book, because the title promises something the book doesn't deliver. I wouldn't buy it again.
I was on the quest for non-bullshit books that teach you a bit about writing, without a lot of "hot air". We'll this is a gem in my opinion. The system is really golden and you allways get a handfull of examples to it. After my 2nd run through, im going to buy his other book, about writing a Novel with the Snowflake Method too.
Ein kleines Buch mit super Inhalt. Grade als Anfänger finde ich es gut Schreibregeln mit Beispielen erklärt zu bekommen und bei Randy gibt es all das. Klare Regeln, gut erklärt, gut geschrieben ohne den Versuch das Buch zu strecken. Es geht nur um Szenen und nichts mehr. Hat mir sehr geholfen.
Although I had already read "The Snowflake method" and "Writing Fiction die Dummies" I struggled with my scene list ... and this book was published exactly when I needed this advice. Thanks a lot, Randy!And now a booklet on writing dialogues, please!
