This is one of the worst books I have read in ages. I bought it because I am a horse owner.I thought it would be something like Black Beauty, which is a great book, written to help the plight of working horses in the 19th century and a lot could be and was learned from it.This book however, is a trivial child's tale of a horse's experiences during World War One Its only similarity to Black Beauty, is that it is written in the first person. The horse as 'I'.It should provoke feelings of horror - the first world war was a terrible war and everyone who had to take part must have suffered immensely. The horses too. However, the narrative is so childish that the great battle descriptions are dull and superficial. What's more, you can read the book in an afternoon - it really is more of a child's book than an adult's although I doubt children would enjoy it much either.The worst sentence in the book? The horse says, 'My feet were sore.' My feet? Horses had hoofs last time I checked and sore hoofs are not caused by walking on them but by poor care, poor shoeing and poor diet.I would neither recommend this book for an adult nor a child.Apparently there is also a Hollywood film version of the book but if the critiques that I've read are anything to go by, you should give the film a miss too.All in all, a disappointment
I ordered this book, because of all the hype about the movie, I usually prefer books to movies, in fact I do not mind reading a book before watching a movie because I believe the intention of the book is usually the storytellers first vision and direct message to the reader so that a movie can only be an interpretation of a book via visual medium, which means the emphasis is no longer on the message directly from the author to the readers imagination but rather on the interpretation of the original story by the movie maker which can effect a change in the authors original intention that may or may not be better or worse, but that is just my opinion, i do like movies for showing me things that maybe i could not have imagined on my own.Back to the book, it is a good fast read, reminscent of such famous classic stories that have horses featured as the narrator, like "Black Beauty" and "My friend Flicka". I think the story is somewhat contrived in such that there are some far fetched coincidences, but all three books mentioned have that issue of the somewhat far fetched coincidences in common and that certainly does not lesson the message of the book which I read to be the importance of, loyalty, love, friendship and peace. I reccomend reading this book.
After I heard from a movie in Germany about this book I was interested and bought it. I read it on vacation and was overwhelmed. The author write this story from the side of the horse Joey. You have no problem to follow the horse in his world and how he see the war and everything around. It’s a sad, touching and happy story in one book. The war and every effects of this are explained by Joey without any shoking details but anyway you can imagine how it was in many scenes. Especially the scene when Joey’s best horse friend die and he stay next to him and can’t understand why he is dead. I’m honest, sometimes I was crying during reading this book. But it’s a very good book and the author write in a perfect way. I loved it even it was so sad and frustrating.
Meine Bewertung bezieht sich auf das englische Hörbuch, gelesen von Dan Stevens. Dabei handelt es sich um eine geschickt gekürzte Version des Buches. Dan Stevens ist ein begnadeter Leser, der er schafft, mit einer Vielzahl von Akzenten und einem Maximum an Stimm-Modulation das Buch so fesselnd zu lesen, dass man dabei wirklich alles andere vergisst. Es ist daher nicht nur inhaltlich ein Genuss, der spannenden Geschichte des Kriegspferdes Joey zu folgen, sondern auch ein Fest für Freunde der akustischen Ästhetik!
Ein Kinderbuch, das jedem Erwachsenen gut gefallen kann. Ein Kriegsbericht aus Pferdeperspektive, sehr anschaulich, wobei die Grausamkeit des Krieges zwar durchkommt, aber hinter der Geschichte von Joey, dem Pferd, zurückbleibt.Sehr empfehlenswert
Somehow missed this book on my reading list as a child and thoroughly enjoyed it as an adult.
Das ist doch mal eine Perspektive, aus der man sonst wohl noch nicht so oft etwas betrachtet hat. Natürlich weiß niemand, wie Pferde denken, aber diese Geschichte ist sehr schön und mitfühlend geschrieben. Und was für mich ein großer Pluspunkt ist: auch für Leute, die früher keine eins in Englisch hatten, ist es sehr gut verständlich. Vielleicht liegt es daran, dass es eigentlich ein Jugendbuch ist, aber ich fand es trotzdem super.
